WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- After the first day of Division III New England's, Rhode Island College sits in first place with 27 points, Connecticut College in second with 12 points, and Southern Maine is in third with 12 points.

 

In the hammer throw, Chelsea Yang of RIC won the event with a throw of 51.74 meters. Close behind her was teammate Melissa Mejia who threw a distance of 49.57 meters. Jamie Dobson joined her teammates, placing in eighth with a throw of 44.67 meters. RIC also gained points from Emma Landroche in the long jump, placing in 2nd with a best jump of 5.65 meters.

 

In the 10,000 meter race, Connecticut College's Meredith Cronin came in second with a time of 38:16. Her teammate Eva Brydson followed in fifth place with a time of 39:25.

 

Southern Maine gained all of their points in the long jump. Adela Kalilwa won the event with a jump of 5.82 meters. Mykayla Hoggard came in 7th place with a jump of 5.24 meters.

 

In their second home meet of the season, a handful of Ephs competed on the first day of the championships. Only a few events were contested today, with the majority of event finals being held Saturday. After Day 1, the Ephs sit in sixth place with six points.

 

Friday marked the first day of the women's heptathlon. The first event in the heptathlon was the 100 meter hurdles. Izabelle Ith won the event, running over the 10 hurdles in a time of 14.77. This won her 872 points. Summer-Solstice Thomas finished the race in 15.33 seconds to place fifth. This is a new personal best, and the performance earned her 799 points. Sierra Loomis also had a personal best in the event, crossing the finish line in 16.27 with 682 points. Enough to get her eighth place in the event.

 

Next, the heptathletes competed in the high jump. Thomas led the competition, having a clean progression up to 1.69 meters. This added 842 points to her score. Ith had a great high jump day, clearing 1.57 meters, a new personal best. She finished in 3rd place, and acquired 701 points. Loomis also had a clean progression up to 1.42 meters. This gained her 534 points. After the high jump, the women transitioned into the shot put. Ith finished in 2nd place, throwing 9.95 meters, just one centimeter short of her personal best. She won 526 points. Thomas had a best throw of 9.12 meters, collecting 472 points. Loomis had a strong day in the shot put, having a best throw of 8.98 meters. This throw proved to be a 90 centimeter personal record, winning 463 points.

 

The final heptathlon event of the day was the 200 meter dash. Thomas finished the race in 26.69 seconds, nearly a second lifetime best. She gained 738 points from this race. Ith also ran a new personal best, completing the race in 26.76 seconds. This won her 732 points. Loomis had a good race, as well, finishing in 27.70 seconds with 655 points. After day 1 of the heptathlon, Thomas leads with 2851 points with Ith close behind in second with 2831 points. Loomis sits not far behind, with 2334 points in 10th place.

 

In the long jump, Emma Egan as the only Eph competing. She performed well, leaping a distance of 5.49 meters. This jump was good enough for a 4th place finish, and 5 points. Senior Lindsay Klickstein finished eighth in the 10,000 finsihing in 39:48.69 to scored the Ephs' sixth point.

 

In addition to the heptathlon and long jump, the 100 meter hurdles and 100 meters had preliminary heats today. In the 100 meter hurdles, Caitlin Ubl performed very well. Coming off an injury, Ubl ran the race in a time of 14.78 seconds. This time places her in 3rd heading into finals tomorrow. In the 100 meter dash, both Ephs competing qualified for the finals. Kennedy Green '19, also coming off of an injury, finished the race in 12.20 seconds. This time puts her in first place going into finals tomorrow. Teammate Kiara Tan ran a personal best of 12.39 seconds, putting her in fourth place.

 

Day 2 of the championships, held at Lee Track, will begin Saturday at 10 a.m.

 

Baseball

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Jack Bohen scattered six hits over eight innings Friday to pitch Williams to a 6-1 win over Wesleyan.

 

Bohen gave up just one unearned run before turning the ball over to Phillip Barnett and Kyle Dean, who pitched a scoreless ninth.

 

Eric Pappas went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Doug Schaffer and Erik Mini each doubled for the Ephs (22-8, 6-4 NESCAC) who go to Wesleyan for a double-header on Saturday.
