AMHERST, Mass. --  The Williams College women's golf team broke the program's record of 296 with a one-over par, 289 Sunday at the Jack Leaman Invitational, held at the Ledges Golf Club, and hosted by Amherst College.

The new record for a one-day score led to a two-day total record 597, bettering the previous school mark by four strokes. The closest team to the Ephs was 29 strokes back. Wellesley College took second place with a 626 and NYU was third with 632. This team win marks the first time the Ephs have won this tournament since the start of the program.

Individually the team was firing on all cylinders. Leading the way was senior Cori Chan and freshman Olivia White. Both were in red numbers with a pair of 71s. Chan's round featured four birdies while White managed to keep her round to pars and birdies and only one bogey.

"After yesterday's rounds we all knew that we could go low today,"  White said. "Although there were some holes where par was the goal, the course is short enough that many holes were attackable. Knowing which holes to take advantage of really made the difference for us."

Chan took home medalist honors with a two-day total of 147. Three shots back from Chan were teammates White and sophomore Stella Woo. Woo matched her round of 77 yesterday with a one-over par, 73 today. Woo's round consisted of four bogeys and three birdies. Off of a scorecard playoff, Woo just edged out White to take home the runner-up trophy.

Freshman Joanna Kim finished next with a solid T6 finish. Kim struggled with her putting but grinded out her round to still post a sub-80 round. Sophomore Holly Davenport made a raging comeback, bettering her score by 10 shots and climbing 12 spots up the leaderboard. Her two-over 74 today catapulted her to a tie for 14th place. Senior Isabella Wang, playing as an individual, showed poise and consistency with an 80 Sunday to match her 81 from Saturday and tied for 16th.

"Today was a great day for our team," Williams coach Tomas Adalsteinsson said. "We knew that the way we've been playing, we could go low today. I had the feeling during the round that we could even finish under par, and it wasn't far off at all. It's important to understand that it's not just about the amazing golf these young women are able to play. It's about all the hard work they have been putting in for their classes, how they give their absolute best for every practice, regardless of the weather or conditions, and the heart, mind, and soul they give each other. Now we prepare for the next challenge, when we finish out the regular season at home next weekend. We can't wait!"

The Ephs will tee it up for the last time in the regular season May 4-5 at their home tournament, hosted at Taconic Golf Club.

Men's Golf
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Senior captain and Mount Greylock Regional School graduate Jake Foehl, junior captain Sam Goldenring, and sophomore Beau David all put together solid Sunday rounds as individuals at the shortened 27-hole NESCAC Championships at Middlebury's par-71 Ralph Myhre Golf Course.

Goldenring led the Eph golfers with a tied-3rd place finish, shooting an even-par 71 on Sunday to finish the tournament 1-over, 4 shots back of medalist Will Rosenfield of Trinity. Goldenring made 16 pars, 1 bogey, and 1 birdie on Sunday. Despite his typically strong play, by his own high standards, Goldenring could never quite find the spark he needed to make the sort of charge up the individual leaderboard he managed last Sunday at the team's home tournament, with a 5-under Sunday 66.

David finished his round strong with a birdie on 18, but 4 bogeys in a span of 6 holes earlier in the round left David with a 3-over 74 on the day. This meant David would finish the tournament at 4-over, good enough for a tied-9th finish and another top 10 for David who has been solid all spring.

After a tough start yesterday, Foehl bounced back with a decent round of 5-over 76. Foehl made 2 birdies on the day on the par-4 3rd and 17th holes, but stumbled with a double bogey as he made the turn on the 9th. Foehl finished at +12 and in 21st place for the tournament.

Trinity College made a late run on Sunday to win the team event and book their tickets to nationals with an impressive second round team score of 281 (-3), leaving them at 6-over for the tournament. Hamilton finished 2nd, 4 shots back of the Bants, with a Sunday score 290 (+6) and 10-over for the tournament. Hosts Middlebury finished in 3rd, at 15-over, and Tufts took 4th, at 43-over.

This likely marks Jake Foehl's final event as an Eph. Foehl, who walked on to the team as a freshman, has had an impressive Williams career featuring countless memorable performances for the Ephs, and his presence together with fellow senior Will Beischer will be greatly missed in the locker room next year.

Baseball
CLINTON, N.Y. -- Sam Rorher struck out six and allowed just three hits over eight innings to pitch Williams to a 2-0 win over Hamilton and a split of Sunday's double-header.

Kyle Dean allowed one hit and struck out two pick up the save in the ninth.

Doug Schaffer went 1-for-4 and drove in both runs in the top of the sixth.

Williams (20-8, 5-4 NESCAC) hosts Dean College on Tuesday.

Women's Tennis
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- In its last matchup of the regular season, the Williams College women's tennis team defeated the Bates College Bobcats 6-3.

After sweeping doubles today, the Ephs will be going into the NESCAC tournament in the coming weeks, facing familiar faces from other schools.

In doubles, the day was very fortunate for the Ephs. All three pairings took early leads over the Bobcats, with Maxine Ng/Emily Zheng and Leah Bush Julia Pham snagging 5-4 leads to hold Bates at bay. Chloe Henderson and Korina Neveux also pulled in front of Hannah Sweeney and Lauren Hernandez, eventually winning their set 8-0.

Bush and Pham finished with an 8-5 win over Anna Rozin and Bella Stone, but Ng and Zheng were busy battling out a tiebreaker against Isabelle Rovinski and Suzanne Elfman. However, Ng and Zheng prevailed after a tense set, winning the tiebreaker 7-4.

The Ephs were especially fortunate in the first set of singles, winning four of the five over the Bobcats. Ng also found success in singles against Elfman, winning her first set 6-1. Bush was also victorious in her first set, defeating Sweeney 6-2; Yang was not so lucky and lost to Rovinski 6-1. Henderson also was downed in her first set 7-6. Hernandez was "retired" from her singles match of the day.

Neveux, after winning her first, went on to defeat Stone in her second set 6-3. Bush, in a similar fashion, won 6-3 in her second. Yang lost her second to Rovinski; the Bates player totalled her singles record at 6-1 6-0. After being topped by Rozin in her first set, Henderson made a comeback to win her second 6-1, putting her into a tiebreaker against her Bobcat rival.

With her teammate going into a tiebreaker, Ng forged ahead to win her second set against Elfman, setting her singles record for the day at 6-1 6-4. Bates' Rozin, however, pushed the tempo to outpace Henderson and secure her tiebreaking set 10-3. The Ephs, however, had already found their groove earlier and totalled the day at 6-3 over Bates.

Men's Tennis
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- After dropping the first match of the weekend against Bowdoin, the Williams College Eph bounced back to defeat the Bates College Bobcats, 7-2.

The Ephs controlled both singles and doubles play, losing only one match in each to snap their three-match losing streak. The victory brought Williams to 7-7 (.500) to finish off the regular season, including a 5-3 record against NESCAC opponents.

The Ephs won two of three doubles matches, winning two lopsided affairs while dropping a close one. Junior Alex Taylor and freshman Peter Frelinghuysen took care of business against Bates' Ben Eckardt and Nick Glover in an 8-3 win, followed by freshman Kirun Cheung and sophomore Austin Barr defeating the Bates duo of Duane Davis and Dylan Davis, 8-2. The Bobcats' Jacob Kaupilla and Alex Kennedy, however, squeezed out a tight win against Eph junior Ananth Raghavan and sophomore Arturo Kam.

In singles play, however, the Ephs earned a significant, 5-1 advantage. Kam, Raghavan, Taylor, Frelinghuysen and sophomore Noah Reich each won their respective matches.  Each of the Ephs' victories came in two sets or fewer, with Frelinghuysen's win coming in a shortened, one-set match. Additionally, none of the five Eph victors allowed their opponent to win more than three games in a given set. The lone Bates victory came when Kaupilla defeated Barr in a 7-5, 6-3 affair.

"We played with confidence from start to finish and were able to get the job done," remarked Eph assistant coach Felix Sun following the win. It was a strong way to end the regular season. Looking forward to a week of practice and then the NESCAC tournament."

This Friday, the Ephs travel to Middlebury College to kick off the NESCAC championships. The championships will take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
