WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Williams College softball team launched six home runs Wednesday en route to a 13-2, 5-0 sweep of RPI at Cole Field.

The Ephs improved to 20-4 on the season heading into a three-game conference series with rival Amherst scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Friday's contest is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Williamstown. The Engineers slipped to 13-7 on the season.

In Wednesday's opener, the Ephs had eight hits — four of them home runs — and combined that with six walks to win 13-2 in six inning in a game stopped because of the eight-run mercy rule. Sophomore Kirstin Mapes went 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBIs in the victory, and picked up the win from the circle. Senior tri-captain Margo Beck — who homered in both games — had one of the more interesting stat lines you'll see by going 1-for-1 with three walks, four runs scored and four RBIs. Her "walk-off" grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning closed out the contest.

The nightcap was a pitcher's duel for much of the way between the Ephs' Mackenzie Murphy and Jaime Cleasby of RPI.

After Murphy retired the Engineers 1-2-3 in the fifth, her teammates broke it open with three runs to take a 5-0 lead. Riley Salvo drew a lead-off walk, and Cris McElhinney lined a shot off the top of the left-field fence for a double. Jessica Kim lined a single to center that scored Riley Salvo. Lexi Curt lofted a sacrifice fly to right, and Murphy's groundout scored the final run.

Murphy improved to 8-0 on the season by scattering four hits over a full seven frames, walking just one and striking out three.

Monument Mountain graduate Bobby Kinne came off the bench to go 1-for-1 at the plate and scored a run for the Brewers (10-7).

Kellen Hathaway and Alex Pastares each went 2-for-4 with a double for Williams (4-13), which goes to Main to play four against Bates on Saturday and Sunday.
