Thanks: Bromley Mountain Ski Resort's President Bill Cairns presented a check for $8,140 to Thomas A. Dee, president and CEO of Southwestern Vermont Health Care at Bromley Mountain in Peru, Vt. The donation, which was given in support of care at Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center in Bennington, part of SVHC, was raised through Bromley's "Mom's Day Off" event on Friday, Feb. 3.
More than 400 mothers received a $20 lift ticket when they showed a photo of their child or children at the resort’s ticket window. The entire value of the ticket was donated.
For a good cause: The Williamstown Elementary School Endowment Fund will host a cocktail party and silent auction fundraiser on Sunday, March 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Orchards Hotel. The silent auction was originally scheduled for mid-February, but it was canceled due to a snow storm. Tickets cost $20 in advance or $25 at the door, and they include entry to the event, as well as savory hors d'oeuvres served with wine or beer. You can purchase tickets here.
Local supporters of the school are donating an array of items for the silent auction, including Bruins tickets (for the game on March 30th), a mountain bike, kids' summer camps, in-home wine tasting for eight, a five-course tasting menu for four people, art work designed by students under the tutelage of art teacher Emily Beaulieu Anderson and a chance to be "Principal for a Day." The WESE silent auction is a place to find special gifts for family and friends.
While adults enjoy the event at the Orchards, school-age children can have their own fun in the Williamstown Youth Center. A member of the WES faculty and a group of responsible, fun sixth graders will offer games, snacks and crafts for children, school age and older. There is a nominal fee of $5 per child, with a maximum of $10 per family. Get tickets for the fundraiser or signup for child care here.
Lifeguards sought: The Pittsfield Department of Community Development Recreation Program will be seeking applicants for lifeguarding positions at the public beach at Burbank Park on Onota Lake this summer. Interested candidates must be certified in first aid and CPR and possess a current Lifeguarding Certificate; Waterfront Skills Certification is strongly recommended.

Hola: The Dalton Community Recreation Association is offering three new enrichment courses at the Dalton Youth Center this Spring. Take an Introduction to Spanish class, available for children in grades 3-5. Kids will learn counting, greetings and more. An Arts and Crafts Class for grades 3-5 also will be held, with a different craft each week; supplies are included. And in the Let's Make Music Class for ages 2 and up along with parents/guardians, kids will learn about music, singing, dancing, rhythm and instruments.

Know your history: Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' Department of History, Political Science and Public Policy has added a new public history minor. The program prepares students for a variety of professions, including those in public history and historic preservation, as well as positions at museums, archives, libraries, and local, state and federal historic sites. The public history minor is a joint venture with MCLA's arts management program. It provides students with opportunities to combine expertise in history with applied learning in areas such as fundraising, marketing and museum studies.
According to Dr. Anthony Daly, associate professor of history, the addition of the new minor is a natural given the interests of many MCLA students, and the strengths of the college, especially its unique arts management program, which offers expertise and coursework in many areas that overlap with public history. A number of MCLA alumni already are working in the field, at places such as the National Archives in Maryland and the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum in Boston, Daly noted.
In addition to courses offered through the arts management program, requirements include a new course in historical methods and theory, which incorporates elements of digital history in addition to traditional skills in research, and understanding how historians work to understand and interpret the past.
High-tech: Berkshire Athenaeum has upgraded its technology services which allow for a better customer experience. The library now offers scanning services allowing documents to be scanned as black and white images for email attachments or saved to flash drives. Those who need assistance with scanning can also stop by the Reference Desk.
This function complements existing library computer services which provide access to desktop workstations outfitted with office software; laptop and mobile devices; wireless internet service and printing from patron-owned devices. These enhancements provide better print management to the many patrons who visit the library to draft resumes, research papers, and other documents.
Seeds for sale: Berkshire Conservation District, a not-for-profit, state-mandated conservation organization, is now taking orders for their annual spring plant and seedling sale fundraiser.
