Mount Greylock Grads Competing on College Ski Circuit

The collegiate ski season got under way this weekend in Lake Placid, N.Y., where several Mount Greylock alumni were in action for their respective collegiate teams.
 
Williams College senior Luke Costley helped the Ephs finish sixth at the season-opening St. Lawrence Carnival. On Day 1, Costley placed 13th in the 1.5-kilometer classic sprint race.
 
Williams’ ski teams -- downhill and cross country -- combined to finish in sixth place after two days of competition at Whiteface and Mount Van Hoevenberg.
 
Colby College senior Kat Chenail helped the Mules place fourth in the event. Chenail was 67th on Saturday in a 5K skate race.
 
Freshmen Grace Smith and Ian Culnane made their collegiate debuts for Bates and Bowdoin, respectively.
 
Smith finished 64th on Saturday to help the Bates Bobcats place seventh out of 17 colleges in action. Culnane and the Polar Bears finished 12th; Culnane was 36th out of 101 men competing in Friday’s sprint.
 
The Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association goes to New Hampshire this weekend for the UNH Carnival.
 
Indoors, Merrimack College freshman and Hoosac Valley High School graduate Trevor Ciempa competed on Saturday at the Bowdoin Invitational, where Ciempa placed third in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 2 inches. Ciempa also finished 11th in the 800 meters (2 minutes, 10.73 seconds) and ran a leg on Merrimack’s 4-by-800 relay.
 
Monument Mountain grad and Springfield College sophomore Jason Laramee won the high jump at his school’s Maroon and White Classic on Saturday. Laramee cleared 6 feet, 6-¼ inches -- 2-¼ inches better than the runner up in the event.
 
The same event also saw Laramee’s former Spartan teammate Ace MacAllister place third in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:06.28. MacAllister is a freshman at Trinity College.
 
Wahconah alumna Jacky Farrell finished third in the triple jump at the Springfield College meet. The Westfield State University senior posted a mark of 33-0 ½. She was also eighth in the long jump.
 
Lenox graduate Tucker McNinch competed in the mile run at Friday’s Joe Donahue Games in Boston, where his Northeastern University Huskies placed second behind West Point in an eight-team field.
 
Drury High School’s Katlyn Toomey is averaging 8.5 minutes per game for the Castleton State women’s basketball team, which is 9-7 going into Wednesday’s game against instate rival Middlebury.
 
The Westfield State University women are 11-6 with two straight MASCAC games on tap before a Jan. 30 date at Williams College. The Owls feature Mount Greylock grad Lucy Barrett and Pittsfield High’s Lauren Carnevale.
 
Barrett has started 14 games and averages 10.1 points per game. Carnevale has 13 starts and has an average of 4.2 rebounds per game with 13.2 minutes per outing.
