Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts junior Keiland Cross was named the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week and Player of the Week on Monday, Dec. 12.

Cross averaged 24.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and six assists in a 2-1 week for the Trailblazers. He was named MVP of the Tri-State Shootout after collecting 28 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in the 82-79 win over Fisher College, notched 27 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the 71-67 win over RPI and added 19 points, six assists and five rebounds in setback to WPI.

For the year, Cross is averaging a team-high 16.9 ppg in 32 minutes per night for the 2-8 Trailblazers.

The rookie honor marked the second straight week he's collected the award and the third time overall this season.

On Tuesday night, in an 88-61 loss to Norwich in the Trailblazers’ semester finale, Cross scored 29 points.

Also competing at the Tri-State Shootout were St. Joseph grad Brandon Casella and the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers. They fell to 2-8 on the season at the event. Casella has appeared in all 10 games and is averaging 12 minutes per game in his senior season.

The SVC women’s basketball team went into the semester break with a record of 1-7. McCann Tech graduate Kelly Dobbert of Stamford, Vt., is averaging 25 minutes per game as a freshman with four points and four rebounds per game.

Southern Vermont’s men’s and women’s teams resume their seasons on Jan. 7.

Williams College freshman and Drury graduate Olivia Carlson, also of Stamford, has appeared in three games to date for the Ephs’ women’s basketball team, which is 7-2 and resumes its schedule on Dec. 29 on the road in Wisconsin.

Carlson’s Drury teammate and classmate, Katlyn Toomey, is a freshman this winter on the Castleton State women’s basketball team in Vermont, where she has appeared in five games, averaging 1.2 rebounds in eight minutes per game. The Spartans are 6-2 and will pick up their season on Dec. 29 in Tennessee.

Carlson’s Ephs and Toomey’s Spartans will play one another on Jan. 4 at Williams’ Chandler Gymnasium.

Lenox High grad Scott Carpenter continued his success from the cross country season into the indoor track campaign. On Wednesday, Carpenter was named the Big East Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week after opening the season with the third-fastest indoor 5,000 meter time in the country this year.

““It’s always nice to run a PR in any event,” Carpenter said after clocking a time of 14 minutes, 0.16 seconds at Indiana University’s Hoosier Open. “I particularly like running the 5K because I think it’s a very competitive and challenging event, but I am a bit disappointed I didn’t run faster. I wanted to run a time that would qualify for the indoor national meet but unfortunately I came up short of that.”

Carpenter twice was named the conference’s athlete of the week in the fall.

Just one Berkshire County alum playing a fall sport in college is still in action this year. Mount Greylock grad Jake Benzinger and his Wake Forest Demon Deacons teammates are gearing up for the Dec. 27 Military Bowl, where they will take on Temple in Annapolis, Md., in a game to be telecast on ESPN. Benzinger is a redshirt freshman lineman with Wake Forest who has appeared in 10 games for Williams alumnus and Deacons' head coach Dave Clawson.
