CHELMSFORD, Mass. -- The Lanesborough Bulldogs 12-year-old Cal Ripken Baseball All-Stars started the New England Regional on Saturday with a pair of losses by scores of 10-9 and 11-1.
In the Western Massachusetts champions’ opener, Lanesborough fell behind, 7-0, after three innings against Washington Park, R.I.
But the Bulldogs’ bats came alive in the fourth, and they went on to take a 9-7 lead.
Oscar Low got things started with a double, and Panayiotis Constantopoulos followed with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth.
Low finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Josh Polumbo and Jack Gitterman each had a pair of hits.
The Rhode Islanders answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead.
In the top of the sixth, Thomas Martin drew a leadoff walk, and Low singled to move Martin into scoring position with one out. Martin reached third on a groundout that moved Low as the go-ahead run into scoring position. But Washington Park recorded the final out on a strikeout to end the game.
Low homered to account for the lone Lanesborough run in an 11-1 loss to host Chelmsford, which jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back.
The Bulldogs continue pool play on Sunday afternoon against Oxford, Conn.
