The girls, seen here with troop leader Jennifer Welch, received their award in a ceremony that included local council CEO Patricia Hallberg, far right, and board President/Chairwoman Linda Skorupski.

HOLYOKE, Mass. — Anna Welch, Lily Edge and Eva Myers of the Williamstown/Lanesborough Girl Scout Troop 40003 each received their Silver Award in a ceremony in Holyoke on June 13.

The Silver Award is the highest award available for achievement to a Cadette Girl Scout, grade six through eight. Girls work alone, or together in small groups, to identify an issue/problem that they would like to work towards improving.  They spend at least 50 hours on the leadership project, which has to be approved by the Girl Scout Council. Each project has to have an element of sustainability, meaning that once the project is finished, there is something that will carry on in the future, such as a contiued program or reference to others.

Anna and Lily worked together on a project called "Fitness Boost." They noticed that many students did not participate in sports activities in their school and wanted to ensure that all students understood the importance of taking the best care of their body. They created programs for kindergartners through sixth-graders that focused on topics like healthy eating and the importance of exercise.

Eva worked on her own on a project called "Ready for Reading" to address children's literacy in the community. Over a two-year period, she collected children's books to support her project and then distributed them and volunteered to be a "reading buddy" at the local Head Start with the preschoolers who received the books.
