Berkshires Beat: More Than 200 Compete in Charity Fishing Derby

More than 200 fishermen competed for charity.

Something's fishy: The annual Harry A. Bateman Memorial Jimmy Fund Fishing Derby was held Saturday, June 4. This year, 220 fisherman competed for prizes. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Jimmy Fund in memory of Harry A. Bateman, a former member of Central Berkshire Bowman & I.U.E. Local 255 who was well-known throughout Berkshire County and who became a victim of cancer in 1992.

The winners in the children's categories are as follows:

Heaviest Game Fish: First place: Jason Sweetser, rainbow trout, 2 lbs. 5 oz.; second place: Rebecca Stimpson, rainbow trout, 2 lbs. 2 oz.; third place: Rose Proper, rainbow trout, 2 lbs. 2 oz.

Heaviest Non-Game Fish: First place: Brody Baumgartner, white perch, 9 oz.; second place: Marissa Wendling, bullhead, 9 oz.; third place: Brandon Barde, pumkinseed, 7 oz.

The winners in the adult Heaviest Game Fish category are as follows: First place: Alex Kent, largemouth bass, 3 lbs. 8 oz.; second place: Steven Fones Sr., largemouth bass, 3 lbs. 7 oz.; third. place: Martin Farell, rainbow trout- 2 lbs. 7 oz.

And the Special Heaviest Fish first place awards go to: bass, Tim Lambert, largemouth bass, 3 lbs. 9 oz.; perch/crappie: Shaun Herforth, crappie, 1 lbs. 3 oz.; carp, Matt Clark, common carp, 11 lbs. 1 oz.; trout/adult, Dave Christman, rainbow trout, 2 lbs. 10 oz.; trout/child, Dyan Lambert, rainbow trout, 2 lbs. 6 oz.

The Sportsmanship Award went to Angel Sayers.


Waterways closed: Onota Lake and Richmond Pond will be chemically treated with aquatic herbicides on Monday, June 13, to control invasive Eurasian watermilfoil and other nuisance aquatic vegetation.

The lakes will be closed to all water uses including, swimming, fishing and boating on the day of treatment.  These uses may resume on the morning of Tuesday, June 14.  Please note that use of the lake water for irrigation such as watering lawns, gardens or plants of any kind is strictly prohibited for 14 days post treatment.

Printed posters warning of these and other temporary water use restrictions will be posted around each lake shoreline in advance of the treatment. For more information, call Jim McGrath at 413-499-9344.


Applications for grants: The National Board has awarded Berkshire County $60,604 in Phase 33 Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) assistance. Berkshire United Way, local administrator of the program, is urging qualifying organizations located throughout Berkshire County to submit an application for supplemental emergency food and shelter funding for Phase 33 at www.ctkodm.com/berkshireunitedway.

Local organizations chosen to receive funds must be private voluntary non-profits (with a voluntary board) or units of government; have an accounting system; practice non-discrimination; and have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs. Applications must be submitted on line and are due by midnight Monday, July 25, 2016.  To complete the application, go to www.ctkodm.com/berkshireunitedway and use efspqualify as both the username and password.


Golf tournament a success: Berkshire County Arc held its 22nd annual Golf Classic at Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield on May 26. More than 190 golfers on 48 teams participated in the tournament, which raised $42,500 to support individuals with developmental disabilities and brain injuries throughout Berkshire and Hampden Counties.

Approximately 100 organizations contributed sponsorships to the Golf Classic, including Corporate Sponsors Health New England and Greylock Insurance Agency. In addition, more than 50 volunteers and organizations donated time, raffle prizes and silent auction items.

To date, the agency’s annual Golf Classic has raised approximately $683,500 and awarded more than $86,250 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are pursuing careers in the human service field.
