Letter: Mount Greylock School Building Project Deserves Our Support

To the editor:

Tomorrow, March 15, will be a day that we, as residents of Lanesborough, will look back upon and say we did the right thing for our children, our towns and our communities by voting for the Mt. Greylock Building Project.

Saying YES is not putting the cart before the horse, as one opponent claims. In fact, now the cart is full of tens of millions of dollars of state aid and we are ready to move forward. We have worked hard for many years for just this moment in time and the Berkshire County Education Task Force agrees.

Lanesborough continues to be a town where families choose to come to to raise their families, specifically because the schools are excellent. Ask the parents of Lanesborough Elementary School and Mount Greylock students. Some people may not be aware of the improvements in the past decade. LES is now one of the highest-performing elementary schools in the state. With strong coordination between Lanesborough and Williamstown in academics, sports and music, our kids arrive at Mt. Greylock well-integrated and ready to succeed.

Yes, there are economic challenges for the town, but not everything is doom and gloom. Target (thank goodness) is not going anywhere. The Regal Cinema has recently invested in their theater and it continues to be a destination. Bradley Farm has achieved organic status and has invested in a new interior. A highly successful local manufacturing company recently moved next to Krispy Cones. New community supported agriculture farms have quietly sprung up in the last few years. These are just a few examples of successes that we can build upon if we work together and focus energies on economic development.

Let’s seize this opportunity, invest in the future and ensure Lanesborough’s reputation as a great place to live and raise a family.
