Winterfest returns with ice sculpting, chowder sampling, wagon rides and more this weekend. See photos from last year here.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The city's 19th annual Winterfest kicks off this coming weekend with community events and the ever-popular Chowder Cookoff.

New this year will be a Winterfest Farmer & Artisan Market that organizers hope will become an annual event. It will be held at 66 Main St., the former Sleepy's in the L-Shaped Mall.

The market will feature more than 40 farm, food, and craft vendors from the area including many North Adams Farmers Market seasonal vendors. Shoppers can expect to find a wide range of local goods including wine, eggs, vegetables, meats, honey, maple syrup, relishes, pastries, breads, granola, shortbreads, natural body care products, herbal remedies, herbal blends and seasonings, gluten-free baked goods, essential oils, goats milk products, a variety of jewelry and accessory vendors, artist prints, fiber crafts, wood crafts and even chair massages.

Winterfest runs from 10 to 4 on Saturday in the downtown area. Some activities will be weather dependent, but expect the community bonfire, hot cocoa and cookies, ice sculpting, wagon rides and face painting. If there's enough snow, there will be snow-creations being built at Colegrove Park.

The chowder cook-off will be held at 85 Main St. from noon to 2. Attendees are invited to sample chowder made by various local venues and vote for People's Choice. Three judges, including someone from iBerkshires, will determine the cookoff winner.

There will also be free ice skating and rentals at Peter Foote Vietnam Veterans Memorial Skating Rink.

Sunday's activities at Windsor Lake are canceled for lack of snow.

Winterfest is sponsored by Greylock Federal Credit Union, MountainOne Bank, Scarafoni Associates, and First Hartford Realty.
