Filson Helps Backstop West to Bay State Games Gold

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Mount Greylock boys lacrosse goalie Cal Filson won a gold medal Thursday along with his West lacrosse team at the 2015 Summer Bay State Games.
 
The West team steamrolled the competition throughout the tournament. West defeated the Northeast team 22-3 (Tuesday), the Central team 21-3 (Tuesday), and the Southeast/Coastal team 25-1 (Wednesday) in the preliminaries.
 
It then went on to defeat the Northeast team 25-1 in the semi-final and the Central team 22-7 in the gold medal game.
 
Filson shared goalie duties throughout all the games with Brett Jones of Division 2 Minnechaug and Matt Reynolds of Division 2 Westfield. All three goalies were named captains for the gold medal game.
 
Filson allowed two goals on two shots on goal in the first prelim game against Northeast but led the team in saves in the second prelim game against Central with five saves on six shots on goal.
 
In the third prelim game against Southeast/Coastal, Filson had one save on two shots on goal.
 
In Thursday's semi-final game, Filson again led the team with three saves on four shots on goal. In the gold medal game, Filson had three saves on five shots on goal.
 
The West team was coached by Chicopee head coach Bill Scott. The West team had two All-Americans and 14 All-Western Mass selections (including Filson, the only Berkshire County player named to the team).
