Douglas Dias withdrew his candidacy for superintendent in West Springfield to negotiate with Williamstown and Lanesborough.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — It appears the Lanesborough-Williamstown schools' new superintendent will be current Medway High School Principal Douglas Dias.

On Thursday, Dias withdrew his name from consideration for the superintendent position in West Springfield, West Springfield Mayor Edward Sullivan said on Thursday afternoon.

The West Springfield School Committee, which Sullivan chairs, reportedly offered its job to its interim Superintendent Michael Richard, MassLive reported on Thursday night.

Dias interviewed for the West Springfield post on Tuesday. He gave his notice to the Medway School District before interviewing for the Lanesborough-Williamstown post.

Last week, the Mount Greylock Regional School Committee and the Williamstown and Lanesborough Elementary school committee members on the Superintendency Union 71 Committee voted unanimously to offer the position to Dias the same night they interviewed him and one other finalist.

Mount Greylock School Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Greene said Thursday that she was pleased to hear that Dias had withdrawn from West Springfield and another district where he was a candidate.

"I think with the enthusiasm and interest Dr. Dias has shown, he is going to able to hit the ground running," Greene said.

Currently, Gordon Noseworthy is serving as the interim superintendent of the Tri-District, a collaboration of Mount Greylock and the two elementary schools, which are united under the SU71 umbrella.

SU71 has a meeting scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m. at Lanesborough Elementary School to vote on the contract negotiated with Dias. The Mount Greylock School Committee is scheduled to do the same on Wednesday at the junior-senior high school.
