NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — For the 25th consecutive year, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' Department of Athletics will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The theme of this year's event is "Game ON." It will take place on Saturday, Feb. 7, in the James T. Amsler Campus Center gymnasium, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Girls in Grades 3 through 8 and women of all ages are invited to attend. Advance registration is required for this event, which is free for youth. Register online here. There will be a $5 charge for each adult. Lunch will be provided to all participants.

Sports clinics for girls will include basketball, volleyball, tennis, lacrosse and Zumba dance. Activities for adult women will include open swim time, an open fitness center, and pickleball with Barbara LoPiccolo at McCann Technical School (no experience is necessary).

MCLA women student-athletes and their coaches will be among the facilitators.

Following the activities, all participants will be guests of MCLA's women's basketball team for their game against Fitchburg State University, to begin at 1 p.m. After the game, guests will have the opportunity to receive autographs from the Trailblazers.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports. It began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women’s sports.

Hyman died in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since that time, the event has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize present-day sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.

This National Girls and Women in Sports Day event is being sponsored by the MCLA Athletics Department, with the law firm of Donovan and O'Connor as the exclusive lunch sponsor.
