NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Schools across the region have already canceled afternoon activities and Gov. Charlie Baker has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of a major blizzard.

North Adams, Lee, Florida, Pittsfield, Stamford and the Southern Berkshire School District have already canceled classes for Tuesday; other school districts are expected to follow suit. Follow our school closings list.

Pittsfield has declared a winter emergency beginning at 6 p.m.; there will be no trash pickup on Tuesday. Snow emergencies begin at 8 p.m. in Lenox and 9 p.m. in Adams. A snow emergency means no overnight parking on streets.

North Adams has declared a snow emergency beginning at 6 p.m.; City Hall, transfer station, the Public Library and the Spitzer Senior Center will be closed on Tuesday.

The governor has instituted a statewide travel ban effective at midnight to clear the way for cleanup efforts and has ordered nonessential employees in the executive office departments to stay home.

Snow is expected to begin falling in the Berkshires this afternoon, with heavier accumulations after 4 p.m. There is a possibiliy of up 10 to 18 inches in the region, according to the National Weather Service, with up to 2 feet in the Southern Berkshires and Taconics. Wind gusts could reach up to 30 mph with low visibility and temperatures 10 to 20 degrees.
