WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The deadline to register to vote or to change party affiliation for the Tuesday, Sept. 9, state primary is Wednesday, Aug. 20, by 8 p.m. Absentee ballots are also available.
City and town clerks will have special and later hours for registration on Aug. 20.
• Clarksburg Town Hall: 2 to 4 and 7 to 8. Voter registration cards and absentee ballot applications can be found in the entryway to Town Hall. Questions: Town Clerk Carol Jammalo at 413-663-8255, ClarksburgTclerk@gmail.com or 111 River Road, Clarksburg, MA 01247.
• North Adams City Hall: 8 to 8. Absentee ballots available in the city clerk's office. Questions: City Clerk Marilyn Gomeau at 413-662-3015 or 413-662-3016.
• Pittsfield City Hall: Open until 8 p.m.; absentee ballot request available here. Questions: City Clerk Linda Tyer at 413-499-9361 or ltyer@pittsfieldch.com.
• Williamstown Town Hall: Open until 8 p.m.; students who have moved back to Williamstown should call the office to confirm they are still registered to vote. Absentee ballot request available here. Questions: Town Clerk Mary C. Kennedy at 413-458-9341.
Residents may vote absentee if they will be absent from town on primary day, have a physical disability that prevents them from voting at the polling place, or cannot vote at the polls due to religious beliefs. All applications for absentee ballots must be made in writing no later than noon Monday, Sept. 8.
Family members of a person qualified to vote by absentee may request an absentee ballot on their behalf. A voter may also apply for an absentee ballot and then vote in the town or city clerk's office during the same visit.
Citizens can also register to vote at any Department of Motor Vehicle office, or check registration status on the Secretary of Commonwealth website.
Primary day voting is open to all registered voters but only unenrolled voters may select which party primary to participate in, either Republican or Democratic.
In the Republican primary, the only race on the ballot is for nomination for governor between Charles D. Baker of Swampscott and Mark R. Fisher of Shrewsbury.
The Democratic primary has a number of races, including the three-way race for the gubernatorial nomination: Donald M. Berwick of Newton, Martha Coakley of Medford and Steven Grossman of Newton. Also on the ballot are candidates for lieutenant governor, Leland Cheung of Cambridge, Stephen J. Kerrigan of Lancaster and Michael E. Lake of Boston; for attorney general, Maura Healey of Boston and Warren E. Tolman of Watertown; and for treasurer, Thomas P. Conroy of Wayland, Barry R. Finegold of Andover and Deborah B. Goldberg of Brookline.
All of the county's state representatives and senator are running unopposed in both the primary and in the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 4. The list of Berkshire polling stations can be found here.
