In the Republican primary, the only race on the ballot is for nomination for governor between Charles D. Baker of Swampscott and Mark R. Fisher of Shrewsbury.

The Democratic primary has a number of races, including the three-way race for the gubernatorial nomination: Donald M. Berwick of Newton, Martha Coakley of Medford and Steven Grossman of Newton. Also on the ballot are candidates for lieutenant governor, Leland Cheung of Cambridge, Stephen J. Kerrigan of Lancaster and Michael E.
