Milne Public Library Hosts Summer Reading Programs

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Sign-ups have begun for the "Fizz Boom Read" Summer Reading Program for younger kids and the Teen Summer Reading program, “Spark A Reaction,” at the Milne Public Library.

“Fizz Boom Read” will run June 30 through Aug. 15. Children can earn a variety of prizes by bringing their reading logs into the library throughout the summer.

Several programs will be held in conjunction with the program:

* Saturday, June 28, 10:30 a.m.: Pinto Bella Hoops will do a hula hooping workshop.

* Saturday, July 12, 1 p.m.: Mad Science of New England will present Fire and Ice, a fun interactive science program about states of matter.

* Wednesday, July 30, 6:30 p.m.: Ed the Wizard will do a magic show.
 
* Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2 p.m.: Nutshell Playhouse will present their show Nutshellapalooza.

The library also will be visited by a couple of Williams professors this summer who will come talk about what scientists do. On Monday, July 7, at 1:30 p.m., Williams professor Amy Gehring of the Chemistry Department will show some of her chemistry research about bacteria. On Thursday, August 7, at 1:30 p.m., Williams professor Daniel Aalberts of the Physics Department will show some hands-on experiments.

“Spark A Reaction" is for students entering seventh through 12th grade. Students can keep a reading log, enter weekly raffle drawings and participate in free, hands-on creative workshops at the library. Copies of the Mount Greylock required reading books will also be on hand for students to check out.

Workshop offerings include the following:

* “Make Your Own Comic Book,” July 7-11, 10-11:30 a.m. each day.  Participants will create a captivating story and illustrate the action. Artist/educator Emily Brannan will guide teens in learning  how to panel a page and bring characters to life.

* “Progressive Palette Painting Party,” July 24, 1-3 pm. Paticipants will re-create a painting masterpiece to take home, with acrylics on canvas, and the help of two accomplished artists.

* “YouTube for YOU! Utilize the full functionality of the new YouTube,” July 29, 30, 31, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each day, at the WilliNet Studio on Spring Street.  Shoot a video, upload and edit on YouTube, learn the do's and don’ts of music copyright and fair use.

All of the workshops are free to seventh through 12th graders, but space is limited. Sign-up sheets are located in the children’s room at the library.
