WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The history of trolley service in North Berkshire will be tracked in a free public lecture on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m. at the David & Joyce Milne Public Library.

The illustrated talk by John M. Hyde, professor emeritus of history at Williams College, will feature an overview of trolley cars as a means of public transportation in the United States. Particular emphasis will be placed on the emergence, dominance and ultimate disappearance of trolleys from Williamstown and Berkshire County.

A former dean of students at Williams, Hyde was a member of the college's faculty for 50 years. He is a member of the fifth generation of a family that has lived in Berkshire County for more than 200 years. His lecture is sponsored by the Williamstown Historical Museum, for which Hyde serves as a member of its board. An ardent "rider of trains," Hyde turns his attention to another rail-borne vehicle in this lecture.

The museum has more than 200 contributing members. Located in the library, it is free and open to the public Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment arranged by calling 413-458-2160.
