Employment Board Head Named to Education Panel

- January 23, 2008

PITTSFIELD - Heather P. Boulger, executive director of the Berkshire County Regional Employment Board Inc., has been named to a state panel on community service learning.

Her term on the CSL Advisory Council is 2007-08.

The Board of Education Advisory Councils were established by the Education Reform Act of 1993 to advise the commissioner of education and the board on matters relevant to their areas of focus in the development of education reform.

Each council meets four to six times per year at times and locations determined by its members. Through diverse membership on each advisory council, the commissioner and board are able to draw on the perspectives and experience of a wide variety of constituents in order to strengthen public education.

The council will review, advise, and make recommendations on state service-learning programs and policies to promote academically meaningful, sustained, and high quality service-learning experiences throughout students' schooling. In this capacity, the council will serve as a resource to both the Board and Department of Education.

During 2006, the council finalized a white paper, "Fulfilling Our Civic Mission: Service-Learning in Massachusetts." It lays out a set of recommendations for advancing service-learning across the state.
