Lanesborough Teen Killed in Fatal FallBy Jen Thomas - December 21, 2007
LANESBOROUGH - Police are investigating the death of a local teenager whose body was found at the "bottom of a cliff in a rugged, wooded area off Silver Street," according to a statement released by the Lanesboroough Police Department on Friday.
Officers discovered the body of Geoffrey Lewis, a 17-year-old resident and a senior at Mount Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown, sometime after 8:40 p.m. on Thursday. Local and state police had responded at that time to a report of an abandoned vehicle and a lost or missing person in a wooded area near Silver Street, a quarter of a mile from the intersection with Bailey Road. Lanesborough Police Officers Darren Derby, Martin Streit and Michael Klinger and state Trooper Shawn Carroll were met by Linda Lewis, Geoffrey's mother, and her boyfriend, Gerald Szpila, who said they were looking for her son.
Officers found the boy's vehicle pulled off the road in the area, apparently stuck on what authorities described as a "snowmobile trail."
Lanesborough's K-9 Officer James Rathbun his dog, Nitro, and the Lanesborough and Pittsfield Fire departments were also called to the scene.
Sgt. Gary Kirby said he could not definitely confirm a time of death but he said it is believed that Lewis was not in the woods for long prior to being found.
According to Mount Greylock Superintendent William Travis, students were informed of Lewis' death in their first-period classes on Friday. An "emergency response team" composed of faculty and administrators organized counseling sessions throughout the day and letters were sent home to parents informing them of the death.
Calling Lewis a "very good student," Travis said a service has yet to be planned but a notice to the public will be posted if the family and the school arrange a time. Counseling sessions may also be offered during the winter break, "as the need arises."
The State Police Crime Prevention and Control Unit, part of the Berkshire County district attorney's office, is investigating, a normal occurrence in an unattended death. |
