Tuesday Afternoon Taste Test: Cafe Latino

By Christine DiLorenzo - July 25, 2007

Cafe Latino's fish tacos are an amazing way to top a trip to the museum.
North Adams - Are you looking for a relaxing lunch experience? Then look no further than Café Latino located at 1111 Mass MoCa Way (just inside the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Arts’ main entrance). Upon walking into the café, you are able to take in the contemporary styles of the displayed exhibits which flow right into the restaurant’s décor. The soft lighting along with ethnic music grants for a pleasant dining experience.

My co-worker Lyndsay and I were greeted by our waitress with a smile and were seated promptly. Once seated, we were given the lunch menu as

well as a full wine list.

Appetizers

The appetizer menu offers 7 mouth watering choices. They included quesadilla [$7.00], crispy calamari [$9.00] or a half order for [$5.00], spring rolls [$10.00], watercress salad with oranges, jimaca, avocado and jalapeno [$7.00].

Lyndsay and I chose the quesadilla to start; this arrived hot and crispy, stuffed with a three-cheese blend, caramelized onions and a yellow chili sauce for dipping on the side. With our taste buds

pleasantly surprised, this was a wonderful way to begin our luncheon.

Lunch Menu

The lunch menu offered an array of items, some of which included a roasted Portobello Sandwich [$9.00], Grilled Chicken Salad [$11.00] and Anticuchos [$13.00] which consist of Marinated Beef Skewers on Herbed Flat Bread, Chimichurri & Peruvian Sarsa.

Lyndsay ordered the fish tacos, which included three tacos for $10.00. The fish was breaded and deep-fried, wrapped in a soft grilled tortilla with shredded cabbage, scallions, avocado and lime cream. Lyndsay was a little uncertain as she placed her order because she had never had fish tacos before. The outcome was marvelous as the fish tacos were delicious.

El Croque Senor
I ordered the El Croque Senor. This sandwich consists of Roast Pork & Ham accented with avocado, cheddar and watercress, served on jalapeno ciabatta bread accompanied by a side order of fries. I was delightfully surprised when the El Croque Senor was lightly dressed with chipotle mayo, which gave it a great kick, and a nice size portion of crispy fries as well. This lunch was not only pleasing to my eyes but my stomach as well.

Dinner Menu

Café Latino also has a separate dinner menu which includes a Pan seared Salmon [$21.00] and Ahi Tuna [$22.00]. Also a family style menu which will serve two - four people that includes Slow Roasted Peruvian Style Chicken [$26.00], Citrus Braised Pork Shoulder [$28.00], and New England Family Farms Guava Grilled Skirt Steak [$33.00]

Drink Menu

Beverages included Coca-Cola soft drinks, bottled or draft beer as well as a selection of wines. There also was a list of a variety of mixed drinks as well. Being working hours, the beverage choices were limited to water and soda.

Overview

Chips and salsa come with the meal.
Overall, the luncheon experience at Café Latino was great from the drinks all the way to the bill. Timing between courses was very good and the service provided from our friendly waitress was amazing.

The total bill which included soft drinks, appetizer and two meals was $35.00 which included tax and tip.

Café Latino is open for lunch Monday- Saturday from 11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Dinner is available Tuesday – Saturday from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Café Latino serves brunch every Sunday from 11:30a.m. – 3 p.m. which their website boasts as featuring the soothing sounds of local guitarist Jon Suters.

Additional information about the restaurant is available by calling (413) 662-2004 or visit their website at http://www.mezzeinc.com/elevenrestaurant .
