Edward "Terry" Coughlin III, 88

December 25, 2023

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. —  Edward Joseph (“Terry”) Coughlin III, 88, of Williamstown, MA died on Monday, December 25, 2023 at Williamstown Commons. He was born in New York City on July 18, 1935, a son of the late Dr. Edward J. Coughlin, Jr. and Ruth (Dunlap) Coughlin.



Terry grew up in Williamstown, attended local schools, and graduated from Trinity-Pawling School in 1952 where he was Top Scholar for both of his two years at the School. Following his graduation, was awarded an English-Speaking Union Exchange Scholarship and studied at Dean Close School in England before entering Princeton University in 1953. He graduated from Princeton in 1957 with a BS degree in chemistry. He worked for almost a decade for Sprague Electric Company in North Adams in their Research and Development Department. During this time he earned a Masters Degree in chemistry at Williams College and also served in the Army National Guard.



In October 1958, Terry married Judith Ann Danaher, also of Williamstown. In 1966 they moved to southeastern Pennsylvania living briefly in Media before settling in Berwyn. For the next several decades Terry worked in the R & D Department of Sun Oil Company (Sunoco.) During their entire marriage Terry and Judy had dogs-- often multiple dogs-- first German Shepherds then Corgis, and were very active in showing and training dogs, most notably with the Philadelphia Dog Training Club in Bryn Mawr. Terry was also a superior bridge player achieving the rank of Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League.



Judy died in April 2016. Several years later Terry moved to Williamstown. He is survived by his sister, Cecile Best of Canaan, NY and brother, David Coughlin (Marilyn) of Williamstown, Coughlin and Dunlap cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews.
