WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Margaret Stevenson Odell, 93, lifelong resident of Williamstown, died on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, at North Adams Commons.

Margaret was born in Williamstown, Mass., on May 10, 1927, a daughter of the late Loren George Odell & Christina (Stevenson) Odell. She attended schools in Williamstown and graduated from the former Williamstown High School with the class of 1945. She worked for 42 years for the General Cable Company in Williamstown, Mass.

During vacations and holidays she would travel coast to coast in the United States and Southern Canada by bus, train, plane and car. In her younger years she often traveled alone. She also took many trips to Scotland, the country of her heritage, and also to other Europeans countries by ship or plane.

Margaret’s membership at the First Baptist Church was always a very important part of her life and that is where she began to volunteer. She sang in the choir, was a member of the youth group and the women’s society, which included missionary work and serving at many church suppers that helped raise money for church-related projects. Margaret was also a Sunday school secretary and would you believe a part-time volunteer janitor. As a deaconess, a few of her required duties were preparing communion, visiting the sick and shut-ins on a monthly basis at hospitals, nursing homes and in the client’s own home.

After retirement, Margaret became involved with the Harper Center’s activities, helping to serve meals at the nutrition site. She belonged to the Friendship Club for about 10 years and has held the office of club president for six of those 10 years. She was also on the board of the Council on Aging.

When Margaret was asked what she was most grateful for, she would tell you it was her eyesight because she lost all sight in one of her eyes as a young child. It is the eyesight in the other eye that has led her to help so many people.

Survivors include her sisters, Laura Odell of Williamstown and Mary Burzimati of North Adams; three nephews, Francis Goodell, Lorenzo Burzimati and Frank Burzimati; two nieces, Nancy Pontier and Linda Goodell; grandnephews and grandnieces Aaron Goodell, Amy Perras, Tammy Goodell, Jeff Goodell and Angela Cote, who was her longtime caregiver, along with niece, Nancy Pontier and friend Larry Morris. She also leaves her friend, Chris Bourdon.

Margaret was predeceased by her sister, Emma Goodell; nephew Richard Goodell; and grandnephews Charles and Robert Goodell.

Funeral notice: Calling hours for Margaret Odell will take place Friday, June 12, 2020, at the Flynn & Dagnoli - WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247 from 10 a.m. to noon; please wear a face mask. Calling hours will be followed by a private funeral service at the First Baptist Church In Williamstown. Burial will follow in the family plot at Eastlawn Cemetery. Memorial donations are suggested for the First Baptist Church of Williamstown. Donations may be made to the Association for the Blind.
