Great Barrington Fire Uses New UTV to Reach Injured Hiker

The department demonstrates how an injured person can be transported with the new UTV.  GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — The Fire Department used its newly purchased utility task vehicle (UTV) this week to rescue an injured hiker.   Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, the Fire and Police departments, along with Southern Berkshire Ambulance, responded to Monument Mountain Reservation for a report of a 23-year-old woman with a broken ankle.   First responders were able to use GPS to track her location, which they determined to be a few thousand feet off Indian Mountain Trail, or about a mile-and-a-half into the woods, according to Fire Chief

Great Barrington Rescuers Locate Missing 13-Year-Old Boy

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — A 13-year-old special needs child who went missing early Thursday afternoon during a hike was located shortly before 7 p.m.

Police Chief William Walsh and Fire Chief Charles Burger said more than 75 rescuers took part in the search that successfully located the child.

Rescuers responded at 12:15 p.m. to Fountain Pond State Park, a 250-acre park bisected by U.S. Route 7, for a report of a missing hiker. Upon arrival, officials were told that the boy became separated from his group during a hike and could not be located.

Firefighters began a search of approximately 3 miles of trails, but were unable to locate him.

Great Barrington Fire Douses Blaze at Mill Complex

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — The Great Barrington Fire Department extinguished a fire at an abandoned mill building on Saturday afternoon, the second fire in a week caused by embers igniting during dry weather.    Just after noon, the department was dispatched for a roof fire behind the Housatonic Fire Station (Great Barrington Station 2), according to Chief Charles Burger.   Crews quickly confirmed that the roof of the abandoned Power House Mill — a 200-foot by 100-foot masonry building with 50-foot ceilings that's part of the Monument Mills complex — was on fire. Great Barrington Police Investigating Bank Robbery; Suspects Arrested

Update: Eric J. Sheridan, 36, of Connecticut and a woman, Rachelle Winter, 30, of East Providence, R.I., were arrested Wednesday after allegedly being involved in a bank robbery in Fall Village in the town of Canaan, Conn.   Both suspects are being treated at Sharon ( Conn.) Hospital after crashing their 2014 red Fiat 500, the same vehicle seen fleeing from Monday's robbery of Salisbury Bank in Great Barrington.   Sheridan had allegedly passed a note to a teller at Salisbury Bank demanding money. He then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash in the Fiat, which has Rhode Island plates

Great Barrington Fire Fights House Blaze Twice

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Firefighters rescued an elderly man from a house fire Saturday afternoon from a two-alarm fire caused by cooking and had to return to the home on Sunday morning after a second fire ignited.

The home owned by Ruby Fuller for 50 years is a total loss. A GoFundMe page has been set up for the retired caretaker and foster parent, who had children living in the house with her. A total of seven people have been displaced.

According to Chief Charles Burger, the department responded on Saturday at 2:51 p.m. to 26 Dresser Ave. on a report of a kitchen stove fire at the two-story, wood frame, single-family home.
